Areas of Specialisation

I specialise in general surgery which includes gastrointestinal, hernia, breast, endocrine and venous surgery. I introduced laparoscopic cholecystectomy to Dunedin in 1991 and have developed special interests in colorectal, thyroid and breast surgery. I do the majority of the children's general surgery in Dunedin both public and private. My research studies have been in surgical nutrition and surgical audit. In my clinic, I assess bowel conditions and do sigmoidoscopy and proctoscopy, deal with haemorrhoids (banding or injection) and do minor surgical procedures under local anaesthetic (e.g removal of moles and lumps).

Operations regularly performed at Mercy Hospital by me include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, inguinal and umbilical hernia repairs, operations for breast lumps and breast cancer, bowel resections, anal operations including haemorrhoidectomy, thyroidectomy, and operations for varicose veins. Referral to me for assessment should be made through a General Practitioner.
