At Mercy Hospital we are committed to providing the highest standards of care through our focus on values, safety and service. The Food Services Assistant (FSA) is responsible for delivering the highest level of customer service to our patients, visitors and staff.

We currently have a vacancy for a full time, Food Services Assistant to work in the kitchen area. We are looking for a positive, experienced, self-motivated person to work as part of the small kitchen team made up of Chefs, Food Services Assistants, Café staff and a Team Leader.

Tasks will include transporting food and serving patients on our ward, taking room service orders via an IPad, basic food preparation, cleaning, etc. There will be a high level of interaction with patients and visitors as we are the first hospital in New Zealand to provide Room Service on its overnight ward.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the following:

  • Have exceptional customer services skills
  • Highly developed communication and relationship building skills
  • Have a professional and positive attitude 
  • Be able to work collaboratively within a team and independently
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • A current Food Hygiene 167 certificate would be desirable but not necessary
  • Previous kitchen hand experience would be an advantage
  • Computer literacy would be an advantage.


We are looking for someone with a relatively flexible schedule as our FSA’s work on a rotating roster and work two out of five weekends and involves some spilt shifts however, Mercy always aim to support and take into consideration their employees out of work interests.
