Liver Biopsy

A liver biopsy involves obtaining a small piece of liver tissue to be examined under the microscope. The results will provide valuable information about the cause of and severity of liver damage, which will help determine the best management of your liver problem.

The procedure will take place in the Day Surgery Unit at Mercy Hospital.

The correct site for the liver biopsy will be determined by using ultrasound.

After you have been given pain relief and anti-nausea medication local anesthetics will be injected into your skin and down to the surface of the liver. The biopsy will then be performed. You will be asked to hold your breath for approximately 5 seconds while the doctor uses a specially designed needle to take the biopsy which only takes a few seconds.

After approximately 3 hours observation, the doctor will assess you and providing there are no complications you will be discharged.
