On 13-November 2025 we proudly acknowledged and congratulated all in volved in bringing Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) to Mercy. Thursday 13 marked this exciting milestone for our surgical team and the entire organisation — the successful completion of our first procedure using one of our two new Johnson & Johnson (DePuy Synthes) MedTech VELYS robotic platforms. This state-of-the-art technology represents a major step forward in precision, efficiency, and patient outcomes for orthopaedic surgery. The excitement and collaboration across departments has been fantastic to see, reflecting our shared commitment to continuous improvement and exceptional patient care. Last week a competition took place to find suitable names for our two new ‘recruits’. The winning votes have given us: R2Knee2 and Knee3PO. These names are a nod to their futuristic capabilities and the teamwork that makes innovation possible. Our robotic aides are designed to support our surgeons with real-time data and enhanced cutting accuracy during orthopaedic knee procedures, ensuring personalised optimal implant alignment and fit for every patient. Our first surgical list using the new system ran smoothly, with the surgical team working seamlessly alongside the technology. Naturally, a celebratory cake was enjoyed in the Theatre tearoom, appropriately cut by orthopaedic surgeon Liam Dunbar - see pic at left. A huge thankyou to everyone involved in bringing this project to life — from planning and training to logistics and support. With Knee3PO and R2Knee2 now part of our Mercy team, the future of orthopaedic surgery at Mercy is brighter (and more robotic!) than ever.
