What to Expect

Specialist cardiac diagnosis and treatment.

Your general practitioner or another medical specialist can refer you to the cardiologists at Mercy Heart Centre. You will have an initial consultation with one of our cardiologists. At this appointment, the cardiologist will discuss any further testing or procedures which can be done at Mercy Heart Centre.

Our administrative staff will arrange your procedure date and time and will contact you.

Before your procedure

On the day of your procedure, you can head directly to Mercy Hospital’s reception at your allocated time. You will be admitted through Mercy Hospital's Coolock Day Surgery Unit.

  • Obtain a list of all current medications from your pharmacist.
  • Bring anything you need for your mobility e.g. walking stick, wheelchair.

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home and be with you after your procedure.

  • Please do not bring valuables (we cannot ensure the security of these items).

  • Please do not bring your car - you will not be able to drive following your procedure.

After your procedure

Depending on the type of procedure you have had, you will be able to go home as soon as you have recovered from any anaesthetic / sedation you received. Patients undergoing more complex surgery may stay post-operatively in Mercy Hospital's inpatient ward, McAuley Ward.

After your procedure you will return to the Coolock Day Surgery Unit to recover. You can be reunited with your support person and you will be offered something to eat and drink.

A nurse will discuss with you what to do when you go home, what to do if you need to contact your specialist or general practitioner, pain management and discharge processes.

Follow up appointments if required will be arranged by the cardiologists rooms.
