This year, Mercy Hospital Dunedin proudly celebrates 90 years of service to our local communities – a remarkable milestone that honours nine decades of compassionate care, clinical excellence, and service.
Established in 1936 by the Sisters of Mercy, and originally located in Royal Terrace, before moving up to the current Newington Ave site in 1969, the hospital was founded on a vision of caring for those in need with dignity, respect, and kindness.
While much has changed over the past 90 years, that commitment remains at the heart of everything we do. From humble beginnings to a modern, capable hospital, generations of staff and specialists have helped shape Mercy Hospital into the trusted healthcare provider it is today.
16 July 2026 marks exactly 90 years since the first patient was admitted, and throughout the week of 13-19 July 2026, we commemorated this significant anniversary with a range of celebrations, opportunities to reflect on our history, and moments to recognise the people who have contributed to our journey.
As we celebrate our past, we also look confidently to the future, continuing our mission of providing exceptional care for generations to come.
